About Agalenatea redii (Scopoli, 1763)
Agalenatea redii (Scopoli, 1763) is an orbweaver spider species. Adult males of this spider reach a body length of 4.6โ6.2 millimetres (0.18โ0.24 in), while adult females are longer, at 6.5โ10.3 millimetres (0.26โ0.41 in). Body coloration is highly variable, with a basic color that ranges from light or dark brown to yellowish-orange. Individuals usually have a dark longitudinal band down the middle of the abdomen, with additional transverse bands. In some cases, the opisthosoma (abdomen) has two large white spots on its back, or one dark brown spot with a light edge. Chelicerae and legs are brown. The entire body is densely covered in hairs, with particularly dense hair on the prosoma, the anterior body section. The prosoma (thorax) is relatively broad and pear-shaped. The opisthosoma (abdomen) is fairly flat, and it is wider than it is long. This species is distributed across most of Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Russia from European Russia to South Siberia, Iran, Central Asia, and China. These orbweavers favor open habitats, including sandy arid grasslands, dry shrubs and bushes, sunny woodland edges, and warm steppes.
