About Aethriamanta circumsignata Selys, 1897
Scientific name: Aethriamanta circumsignata Selys, 1897 Identification: The square-spot basker (Aethriamanta circumsignata) is a dragonfly that is very similar in appearance to the L-spot basker (Aethriamanta nymphaeae), and the two species can be difficult to tell apart. The common name of these dragonflies refers to the dark markings found at the base of each species' hindwing. The square-spot basker usually has two dark brown flecks on this wing. One fleck radiates out between the second vein (Sc) and the third vein (R), while the other radiates out between the fourth vein (Cu) and the fifth vein (A). Below these two flecks, there is a large, dark squarish patch that holds a small transparent wedge near the abdomen. A lighter brown area surrounds these dark marks, and this lighter area may extend out to the triangle and the hindwing margin. Light brown markings may also be present at the base of the forewing.
