About Aeshna interrupta Walker, 1908

The variable darner, scientifically named Aeshna interrupta Walker, 1908, is a dragonfly belonging to the family Aeshnidae. Its native range extends from Alaska, through the Northwest Territories, to Newfoundland. In the eastern United States, its range reaches south to New Hampshire and Michigan; in the western United States, it extends south to the mountains of New Mexico, Arizona, and California. This species gets its common name from the distinctive broken stripes found on the side of the thorax in many male individuals. It occupies a wide variety of habitats, ranging from northern and mountain peatlands to cattail marshes and temporary pools. It is the characteristic species of grassland ponds.
