About Aesculus turbinata Blume

Aesculus turbinata Blume, commonly known as Japanese horse-chestnut, is also called tochinoki or tochi in Japanese. It is native to Japan and cultivated in other regions. This species grows as a tree that can reach up to 30 metres (98 feet) in height. Its flowers range from white to pale yellowish, with red spots. The species produces dark brown capsules that are obovoid to pyriform in shape. From around four millennia ago until 300 AD, the Jōmon people of Japan traditionally ate the seeds after leaching them. In modern Japanese cuisine, the seeds are still used to make tochimochi.
