About Aedes scapularis Rondani, 1848

Aedes scapularis is a mosquito species that occurs primarily in the Neotropical regions of the Americas. It has been recorded across Neotropical regions of the western hemisphere. Larval specimens of this species were first reported in the Florida Keys in 1945. In 2020, the species was confirmed to be endemic in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Florida. This mosquito is known to bite humans, and can carry multiple pathogens that affect humans, including yellow fever and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus. In 2021, authorities in southeastern Florida noted that while the species has become established in the region, it is not considered a disease vector of concern for humans or other animals, because the diseases it is capable of transmitting are not endemic to the area.
