About Aechmea bromeliifolia (Rudge) Baker ex Benth. & Hook.f.

Aechmea bromeliifolia (Rudge) Baker ex Benth. & Hook.f. grows either on the ground or as an epiphyte. It occurs in both hot jungles and arid regions, at altitudes up to 2,500 feet. This species produces bright green leaves with prominent spines, arranged in a bottle-shaped rosette. Its branched inflorescence holds red bracts and greenish-yellow petals. After flowering, the plant develops black berries that are classified as edible. A red variant of this species is sometimes sold under the name Aechmea Schiedeana.
