The speckled hummingbird has the scientific name Adelomyia melanogenys (Fraser, 1840). It is a monomorphic species, meaning females and males cannot be told apart. Adult individuals measure approximately 8 centimeters (3 inches) long from the bill to the tip of the tail. The upper plumage is glossy green-bronze. The bird's underside is pale, marked with green and bronze specks. It has a black cheek patch below the eye, with a white stripe above the patch.
