About Actinopyga lecanora (Jaeger, 1833)
Actinopyga lecanora, first formally described by Jaeger in 1833, reaches an adult length of around 250 mm (10 in). The upper and lower surfaces of this sea cucumber are mottled tan-orange, and its anus is encircled by a white ring, which gives the species its common name. It occurs in coastal waters of Asia and East Africa, inhabiting tropical regions of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. Its range extends west to Kenya and Madagascar, and east to Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan, and other island groups in the western Pacific. It is classified as rare in the Taiping Islands and Taiwan. This species is nocturnal, and is most commonly found on forereef slopes at depths between 0 and 23 m (0 to 80 ft), where it favors microhabitats with complex topography.
