About Actinia cari Delle Chiaje, 1822

Actinia cari (Delle Chiaje, 1822) grows to approximately 4 to 5 centimeters wide, and up to 8 centimeters high. It is capable of fully retracting its tentacles. Its colour ranges from brown-green to reddish, it has dark concentric longitudinal rings on its body wall, and it has a roughly cylindrical to conical shape. This is a common species that occurs mainly in the Mediterranean Sea, and can also be found in adjacent areas of the Atlantic Ocean. Actinia cari lives in rocky habitats, attaching to rocks and the underside of smooth stones. It is found in the infralittoral zone and the subtidal zone down to a depth of a few metres.
