The green-backed kingfisher, with the scientific name Actenoides monachus (Bonaparte, 1850), is a bird species in the kingfisher family Alcedinidae. This species is endemic to Indonesia, and it is only found in north and central Sulawesi, as well as on the islands of Manadotua and Lembeh. It occurs within three Indonesian protected areas: Lore Lindu, Bogani Nani Wartabone, and Tangkoko Batuangus. Its natural habitat is dense tropical moist lowland forests, reaching up to 900 meters in elevation. The species is currently threatened by habitat loss caused by deforestation. Previously, the black-headed kingfisher was classified as a member of Actenoides monachus, but it was raised to full separate species status in 2014.
