It is distributed in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and it is currently threatened by habitat loss. This is a medium-sized kingfisher, measuring 22–25.5 cm (8.7–10.0 inches) in length and weighing approximately 60–90 grams (2.1–3.2 ounces).
