About Actaea podocarpa DC.

Actaea podocarpa, commonly known as mountain bugbane or mountain black-cohosh, is a species of flowering plant that belongs to the buttercup family. It is native to the eastern United States, primarily growing in the Appalachian Mountains, with a separate disjunct population located in Illinois. This species grows in rich, mesic forests, and is most often found in boulder-strewn coves. Actaea podocarpa is a large perennial herb. It is one of the later-flowering Actaea species native to the eastern United States, and produces white flowers from summer through fall. Both Actaea podocarpa and Actaea rubifolia look similar to black cohosh, a plant that is valued for treating menopause symptoms due to its vasodilation properties. People harvesting wild black cohosh sometimes misidentify Actaea podocarpa as black cohosh and harvest it accidentally.
