This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1856. Its distribution ranges from western Canada to north-western Mexico. Adults of this species have a wingspan of approximately 38 mm. Depending on their location, adult moths are active in flight from early to midsummer. Documented food plants for Acronicta impressa include bitterbrush, rose, aspen, poplar, and willow.
