About Aconitum uncinatum L.

Aconitum uncinatum L., commonly called wild monkshood or southern blue monkshood, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. This species grows in moist to wet habitats, including areas along streams, within woods, and in clearings. It is native to the eastern United States, where it occurs in the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont, and the upper Atlantic Coastal Plain. The roots and seeds of Aconitum uncinatum L. contain alkaloids, which are at their most poisonous before the plant flowers. This plant has been used to prepare medicine for the treatment of neuralgia and sciatica.
