About Achimenes longiflora DC.
Achimenes longiflora DC. has several common names: Cupid's bow, nut-orchid, and magic flower. This species grows from small rhizomes, reaching up to 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Its leaves are hairy, have serrated (saw-toothed) edges, and can grow as large as 90 mm (3+1⁄2 inches) long and 40 mm (1+1⁄2 inches) wide. Flowers bloom from June to October; they are typically blue with a white throat, and can grow quite large, up to 50 mm (2 inches) long and 75 mm (3 inches) across. Also called flor de peña (rock flower), this plant was collected and documented in the 1970s by Carol Rogers Chickering. At the time of collection, it was found blooming in late summer on embankments and roadsides at intermediate elevations in Guatemala.
