The scrubtit, scientifically named Acanthornis magna (Gould, 1855), measures 11 to 12 centimetres (4.33 to 4.72 inches) in length and weighs approximately 10 grams (0.35 ounces). Its plumage has distinct coloration: the throat and belly are white, while the back, crown, flanks, and tail are brown. The scrubtit has black wings, grey facial plumage, a pale eye, and a short, black, slightly curved bill. This species is often silent, but it produces fairly loud contact calls. Its song is described as "sweet [and] musical".
