About Acanthopagrus schlegelii (Bleeker, 1854)

Description: The dorsal fin of Acanthopagrus schlegelii is supported by 11 or 12 spines and 11 soft rays, while the anal fin contains 3 spines and 8 soft rays. This species differs from other species in the genus Acanthopagrus in that its dorsal, caudal, anal, and pelvic fins are pale in color. Its overall body color is black or grey, with a silvery belly, indistinct vertical stripes along the body, and a round spot on the upper margin of the operculum. The maximum published standard length recorded for this species is 50 cm (20 in).

Distribution and habitat: Acanthopagrus schlegelii occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, specifically in the Sea of Japan, along eastern Japan from central Honshu southwards, the Yellow Sea, and the East and South China Seas. It inhabits sheltered bays, shallow rocky reefs, and brackish waters, and can be found at depths down to 50 m (160 ft).
