About Abudefduf sparoides (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825)
Abudefduf sparoides, commonly called the false-eye sergeant, is a damselfish species that belongs to the Pomacentridae family. This is a tropical marine species native to the western Indian Ocean. Its distribution ranges from Kenya to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, and it can also be found at Aldabra, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Réunion. Adult members of the species usually live on rocky reefs that are rich in coral, exposed to moderate wave action, between 0 and 6 metres (0 to 20 feet) deep. Juveniles of the species are typically found in lagoons and other flat shallow habitats. This fish usually occurs alone or in loose groups. While its diet is primarily made up of algae, it also consumes crustaceans and other invertebrates. It is an oviparous species; during breeding, individuals form distinct pairs, and males guard and aerate the eggs. This species can grow to a total length of 16 centimetres (6.3 inches).
