Abrotanella caespitosa Petrie ex Kirk grows in a loose cushion form, with runners that bear spaced-out scale leaves. Its leaves are narrower than the leaves of its close relatives, and its leaves do not have a waxy bloom. This species occurs in the South Island and southern North Island of New Zealand, where it grows in alpine herbfield habitats.
