About Abagrotis alternata Grote, 1864

Abagrotis alternata, commonly known as the greater red dart or mottled gray cutworm, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. This species was originally described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote, under the scientific name Abagrotis alternata Grote, 1864. It is distributed across eastern North America, ranging from New Brunswick westward across southern Canada to western Alberta, and extending south to Arizona, New Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico. The wingspan of adult moths measures 38 to 43 mm. In Alberta, adults are active on the wing during August, and the species produces one generation per year.
